What is a "Web Host"

A Web Host refers to any computer that is attached to the Internet and has any number of web pages that can be accessed by the public. It is a rather simple definition, but in reality any computer can be a web host.

What do you need from a web host?

There are several things to look for in a web hosting provider. Each are very important but you will have to balance cost vs. services offered. These critical elements are:

Access - What type of bandwidth does the host provide. At the very least, you should only consider web hosts with DS-3 links and preferably fiber optic lines. A T-1 link is no faster than a DSL line 1.54 mbs and would not be adequate for anything other than 56k dial up traffic.
Security - Your web host should have both physical and software based security. Ideally, a web host will have a comprehensive firewall solution, physical security to prevent intruders into the facility, and comprehensive backup plan for restoring or preventing an interruption of service from fire, flood, or power failure.
User Control - What type of access does the web host provide for the end user. Do they provide an easy to use control panel. Do you need technical assistance from the host to add email users or administer the site?
Performance - Does the Web Hosting provider guarantee a level of performance or "up time". If your site is critical to your business, no amount of "down time" is acceptable.
