Comparing Types of Internet Access: 

  • 56k - This is traditional dial up service. Your computer will need to be equipped with a modem. The modem will dial into a hosting computer and connect your computer to the internet. The connection speed will vary depending on: 1. The speed of your modem, 2. The speed of the modem you are connecting to, 3. Line conditions on your local phone company.
  • DSL - This stands for Digital Subscriber Line technology. It uses a standard copper phone line but it is more efficient than a 56k modem. DSL is not available in all areas and it requires that the phone company test the line quality before a DSL line can be installed. Connection Speed will vary based on Line condition and distance from the Phone Company Switch. Typical speeds are 256k to 1.5 mb depending on the distance from the switch.
  • Cable - Cable Technology uses the same cable you get your Television Programming on to carry your data. This is not available in all areas but the performance is usually excellent. You will be required to use a cable modem which may be provided by your Internet Access company. Performance is typically affected only in areas where there is a heavy level of subscription and the total available system resources is not designed for the total number of users. Speeds often exceed 5mb
  • Satellite DSL - This is a relatively new technology. Just as Satellite TV programming is competing with Cable, the Satellite providers are using their technology to provide Internet Access.
